"Hi, I'm Chris Clifford. I am the CEO and founder of Cliffco Mortgage Bankers. I'm going to talk about how I got started in this business.

Back in 1989, I had left a home improvement finance company and really didn't know what I was going to do. So I went and got a home improvement license, started doing repairs on homeowners homes. I had this knowledge of the mortgage business and at the same time, I applied for what was known at that point as a registration to be a mortgage broker. That took, as it does in New York state, quite a while to get, so I started off in the home improvement business, selling jobs, building jobs, completing jobs, and then collecting money, it was a lot of work. A few months later I got my broker's license. Still had people calling me needing loans. I went out to the most underserved neighborhoods in New York city and I had business immediately. I was able to do subprime home equity loans, mostly second mortgages and help people get equity out of their house.

My main focus has always been to listen to the borrower, their needs come first and not necessarily mine."
